The poorest country in the world, Burundi
Do you know Burundi, the poorest country in the world? Here, the GDP per capita is just one-hundredth of that in developed nations. If you earn $100, a person here earns less than $1. You might think that means prices are low too. But that’s not true. While incomes are 1/100 of those in rich countries, the cost of living isn’t. One major reason is geography — Burundi is landlocked in the middle of Africa, far from major trade routes. With weak logistics and little domestic production, most goods must be imported — often at several times their original price. So what is life like in a place like this?
